About
ADHD COACH
ADHD
For children with ADHD, interacting positively with others and managing life’s challenges without becoming overwhelmed, requires flexibility, adaptability, effective problem-solving skills, the ability to resolve disagreements amicably, and controlling emotions when frustrated. ADHD is a chronic lifelong condition for which there is no cure.
Many children with ADHD experience explosive behaviours, emotional dysregulation, and oppositional defiance. These children often have a low tolerance for frustration, chronic inflexibility, and poor problem-solving skills. This is where the ADHD Coach plays a critical role.
ADHD COACHING
ADHD coaching is a collaborative, action-oriented partnership that supports children with ADHD to develop practical strategies, build essential skills, and achieve meaningful goals. The ADHD Coach supports children to:
- Consider other people’s perspectives
- Express frustration in adaptive and constructive ways
- Work toward mutually satisfactory, collaborative solutions
- Resolve disagreements without conflict
The ADHD Coach Model
The ADHD Coach uses a two-step model to achieve positive and sustainable outcomes:
- Collaborative Problem-Solving Approach
- Teaching Crucial Thinking Skills and Executive Functioning
Collaborative Problem Solving
The Collaborative Problem-Solving approach supports the child or young person to understand expectations and have their concerns heard. It assists carers and parents to clearly define the problem and works with both the child and carer to collaboratively develop mutually satisfactory solutions that reduce conflict and build skills.
Crucial Thinking Skills
Many children with ADHD do not yet have the thinking and problem-solving skills required to resolve ongoing challenges. Some may have experienced developmental delays and ongoing difficulty meeting expectations.
The ADHD Coach focuses on teaching crucial and lagging thinking skills, including:
- Frustration tolerance and emotional regulation
- Problem-solving skills
- Cognitive flexibility
Through skill-building and collaboration, ADHD coaching boosts self-esteem, strengthens relationships through improved communication, and supports long-term success.
