MENTOR PROGRAM

ABOUT

Mentor Program – Summary

Purpose
The Mentor Program supports young people aged 10–16 in Out-of-Home Care who are "stuck in transition" and showing high-risk behaviours such as defiance, refusal of support, substance abuse, self-harm, or aggression. The program aims to improve personal development, reduce risk behaviours, and build independence using a culturally competent, strengths-based approach.

Objectives

  • Reduce high-risk behaviours and increase motivation, self-esteem, and resilience.
  • Support personal development, goal setting, and coping skills.
  • Empower young people to build protective strengths and capabilities for a better life.

Target Group

  • Young people in Out-of-Home Care (10–16 years) with high-risk behaviours, trauma history, mental health concerns, or disengagement from case plans.
  • Those at risk of harm, offending, homelessness, or self-destructive behaviours.

The Mentor Role

  • Behaviour specialist with experience in child protection, justice, or Out-of-Home Care.
  • Minimum Certificate IV in Mentoring or equivalent experience/lived experience.
  • Provides planning, leadership, crisis support, and goal-focused mentoring with compassion, resilience, and cultural competence.

Key Program Components

  • Engagement: Positive role model relationships, recreational activities, and personalised support.
  • Planning: Personal development goals addressing welfare, health, education, and family/community connection.
  • Personal Development: Building resilience, coping skills, mental toughness, and practical life skills.
  • Daily Living & Crisis Support: Assistance with housing, health, education, and crisis management strategies.

Approach

  • Strengths-based and youth-centred: the young person is the chief agent of change.
  • Focus on skill-building, risk mitigation, and community connection to help young people thrive and move toward independence.
